Devotion for Burdens

“Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden.” Doesn’t that verse describe all of us, at one time or another? Oh, thank God for his son Jesus! No matter what our burden, no matter how tired and weary we become, we can go to Jesus for relief and refreshing. God’s word, Jesus and the Holy Spirit all work in unison to fill us with renewed energy. They give us a renewed commitment to the tasks he has set before us and a fresh outlook concerning our lives.

Quite some time ago, God lead me to bless someone financially. God saw their need and wanted to use me to bless this person monetarily, every week and he set no time limit. I started out with such excitement and joy. Just knowing that God had given me the capability to bless someone who was in need, caused my heart to soar. No joy is comparable to the joy you experience when God uses you to bless another person. I hadn’t noticed it, but as time wore on, my commitment to bless this person, had a hint of the beginnings of a burden. After all, I didn’t have any idea how long I would be giving and I didn’t see a finish line. If we aren’t careful, the devil can take the wonderful things that God leads us to do and turn them into burdens. Without realizing it, the devil had started to work in my mind . . . my joy was slowly waning, and the ability to bless was turning into a burden. That’s when this verse came to mind, “Let us not grow weary in well doing.” II Thessalonians 3:13. I quickly repented, kicked the devil out of my mind and received a renewed commitment, once again seasoned with joy! I highly recommend memorizing scriptures, they have helped me many times, when I couldn’t get a hold of my bible. The Holy Spirit will be faithful to bring the perfect scripture to your mind, just when you need it the most.

There are many ways we can feel the heaviness of burdens, but we don’t have to be overcome by them. For me, I have found that the key to living free from them, is to seek God for his wisdom. There is always a scripture concerning any specific burden, you just have to search for it, like a precious nugget of gold. When I need to, I ask others to pray for me while I am struggling to get out from under its power. None of us can live consistently free from burdens while we are here on the earth, but we can conquer them, one by one. We just need to be willing to got to Jesus, who is waiting with open arms. Just remember, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) and “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 413)

Whatever your burden, whatever your care, lay it down at the feet of Jesus and you won’t be under that burden for very long. Jesus is utterly and completely faithful! Trust God’s wisdom, for it is far superior to our wisdom. Proverbs 4:7  “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding.” God knows, God cares and he has the answer. Seek his face, get his wisdom, ask him to help you understand the wisdom and how it applies to your situation. God’s here and he’s simply waiting for you.
