Devotion for Bondage

Bondage is not a word that society really thinks is relevant to the present times. In the past, bondage usually applied to slavery, a person being in servitude to another person. Let’s face it, there are many types of bondage, other than slavery. I cannot begin to list all the things that can make us feel like we are in bondage. An unhappy marriage can make us feel oppressed. Men and women work for employers that treat them as though they own them, just because they pay for their services. We over extend ourselves to credit card companies, so we can buy things that we think we need or will simply make us happy. We are no longer free to enjoy them, because we are in bondage or servitude to the credit card company, until we finally get them paid off. Don’t get me wrong, if you can pay your credit card purchases off with no struggle, then you are among an elite group and you can enjoy the freedom of having credit cards. However, many people can only afford to pay the finance charges or minimum amount due, which will take them years to pay off in full. Anything that makes you feel powerless and oppressed, is a type of bondage and let’s face it, most of these circumstances are a direct result of our own decisions.

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Now I’m talking about a different kind of bondage . . . the kind that keeps us from pleasing God. We read that everyone who sins is a slave to sin and those who obey God are slaves to obedience (Romans 6:16). So, I take that verse to mean, that I am a slave to something, whether it be to sin or obedience to God. After reading this verse, I become more concerned about the things I do and I become more conscious of my walk with God. I become more concerned about obeying his word and not serving my sinful nature. This is a battle that all Christians face, but thanks be to God, he has provided his precious son, Jesus Christ. We don’t have to be slaves to sin, because Jesus is anointed to help us serve him, rather than sin.

I like this quote from Ramakrishna, “Bondage is of the mind; freedom too, is of the mind. If you say, I am a free soul, I am a son of God who can bind me? Free you shall be.” As children of God, let us live as if Jesus is alive . . . let us live like Gods word is alive and powerful . . . let us live like he has set us free from the bondage of sinning and obey his word. I ask you Lord to help us walk in victory as children, who are free to serve you and freed from the power of sin.

In closing, those whom the Son sets free, are free indeed. If you find yourself in any situation that makes you feel oppressed and you are able to get out from under the situation, do it! If you aren’t able to free yourself from the oppression, seek God’s wisdom for the grace to remain. If God leads you to remain, he will give you the strength and courage to stay.

Relating Scriptures:

Romans 6:16  Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey . . . whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Acts 8:22-23  Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.

Romans 7:22-25  For in my inner being I delight in God’s law, but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God . . . through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 6:6-7  For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin . . . because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Romans 6:14  For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Luke 4:14, 17-18  And Jesus, returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee; And there was delivered into him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set a liberty them that are bruised.

Titus 3:1  Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all me.

Psalms 103:6  The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.

Psalms 68:19  Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Selah
